San Giuseppe dei Nudi
Art, Spirituality, and Solidarity in the heart of Naples
A sacred relic remained “invisible” for over two centuries. An 18th-century monumental complex including the church with its magnificent organ, as well as the historic garden. And an act of Mercy that, today as then, cares for the poorest.
Among alleys and buildings that narrate centuries of tradition, an extraordinary place arises: the Monumental Complex of San Giuseppe dei Nudi. A priceless heritage of art, faith, and solidarity with a fascinating history. Come and discover it. The Museum of San Giuseppe dei Nudi is just a few steps from Mann, the central National Archaeological Museum.
An Act of Mercy that became History
Founded on January 6th, 1740, the Congregation of San Giuseppe dell’Opera di Vestire i Nudi e Vergognosi was born with a charitable mission: providing clothing for the poor and needy. A small gesture of humanity that, over time, gained profound significance, transforming this institution into a symbol of tangible help.
Under the evangelical motto “Nudus eram et cooperuistis me” (I was naked and you clothed me), the association gained royal recognition and the support of the Church, becoming the Royal Monte and Archconfraternity of San Giuseppe.
The Flowering Staff of Saint Joseph in a Museum Display Case
One of the most fascinating objects in the collection displayed at the Museum of San Giuseppe dei Nudi is the relic of Saint Joseph's Flowering Staff, a symbol of faith and veneration for nearly three centuries. Arrived in Naples in 1712, it was authenticated by the Archbishopric Curia.
Streams of pilgrims came from everywhere to touch it and seek grace, leading to the renowned Neapolitan expression “Non sfruculiare la mazzarella di San Giuseppe” (“Don't tease Saint Joseph's staff”, a phrase commonly used to advise against provoking someone’s patience), stemming precisely from the ancient practice of repeatedly touching the relic to receive a blessing. A tribute to the profound devotion intertwined with the city’s folklore as a symbol of fertility.
The Church of San Giuseppe dei Nudi
Attached to the Archconfraternity's building, the Church of San Giuseppe dei Nudi is a baroque gem dating back to 1750, designed by Giovanni Del Gaizo. It houses an extraordinary 18th-century organ and a choir loft frescoed by Gaetano D’Agostino. Here, every year, the solemn “clothing ceremony” of the poor took place, attended by the royal family and kingdom authorities.
An Artistic Heritage of Great Value
The Foundation’s exhibition halls host precious artworks created between the 14th and 19th centuries. Among them, noteworthy are paintings by Francesco De Mura, Giuseppe Bonito, and a Madonna of Humility on a wooden panel from the 14th century. At the Museum of San Giuseppe dei Nudi, art is not just beauty, but memory and testament of a devoted and generous city.
Alongside paintings, the museum preserves an important music archive, with manuscripts by composers from the renowned Neapolitan School, including Giovanni Paisiello, Chapel Master in 1801.
Portraits of Benefactors: Guardians of Memory
A unique aspect of the Museum of San Giuseppe dei Nudi is the gallery with portraits of nobles, prelates, and benefactors who supported the institution. Among the most notable faces are the Bourbons, with Ferdinand IV and Ferdinand II portrayed with the confraternity’s mantle, testifying to the bond with the crown.
The Rediscovered Garden: An Oasis of Peace
In 2021, the Foundation's 18th-century garden was restored and brought back to its former glory. A place of silence and contemplation, where history, nature, and art merge into one experience.
